The iconic OK State Musical returns
Rodgers and Hammerstein's debut 1943 musical set in OK state returns home to Tulsa! Originally based on the 1931 play by Lynn Riggs, Green Grow the Lilacs, this musical has been nominated for and won various theatrical awards, including a Tony Award and a special Pulitzer Prize for the original libretto. Theatre Tulsa now presents a special homegrown production of the musical that comes sweeping down the plains this month!
Set in Claremont in 1906, the story is centred a love triangle involving a kind and goodnatured cowboy Curly, surly and dangerous farm-hand Judd, and farmgirl Laurie. In the background a similar love story evolves between Annie Ado and WIll Parker, but is almost thwarted by the unscrupulous huckster Ali Hakim.
With a box social due that evening, Curly unsuccessfully tried to woo Laurie, who instead accepts a date from Jud, despite being terrified by him. Jealousy, love and justice are the name of the game as Curly finally ups his game to win Laurie, and Jud tries to stop him - with deadly consequences.
